What’s included in Segment 1

All Star's state-approved Segment 1 course typically takes 4 – 6 weeks to complete depending upon your location and availability. This course consists of:

. 24 hours of classroom time

. 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training

. 4 hours of in-car observation

In Segment 1, students will learn basic traffic laws and safe driving techniques, followed by hands-on practice under the guidance of qualified instructors during behind-the-wheel training.

Our Segment 1 Driver Training course typically takes 4 – 6 weeks total depending upon your location and availability. To get started, find an All Star Driver Training facility near you, browse their classroom schedules to find a time that best fits your needs, and enroll in the Segment 1 course!

The classroom portion takes 2.5-3 weeks to complete, varying based on location. Instruction consists of a minimum of 24 hours which is broken down into two-hour sessions covering basic driving knowledge and safety topics. On the final day, students take a written exam to assess their understanding of the material. In order to qualify for a Segment 1 Certificate of Completion students must must score at least 56 out of 80 questions correctly.

Enrolling in Segment 1 doesn’t automatically schedule your behind-the-wheel driving sessions. You must schedule them separately based on your availability. All driving sessions are scheduled within the first 3 days of starting classroom instruction on a first come first serve basis. According to Michigan state law, all behind-the-wheel sessions must be completed within 3 weeks of finishing the classroom portion of Segment 1.

The scheduling for the drive times tends to be very flexible and offered frequently, however, restrictions apply. Please refer to the Segment 1 Contract or our offices for more information.

Upon successful completion of the course, All Star Driver Education will issue an official  Segment 1 Certificate of Competition. In order to qualify for this certificate, students must complete both classroom and behind-the-wheel training hours and pass the written exam at the end of the classroom portion with a minimum score of at least 56 out of 80 questions.

After receiving a Segment 1 Certificate of Completion, students become eligible to apply for a Level 1 Learner’s License, the first step in Michigan’s three-phase licensing process. For more information on this process, read Michigan’s Graduated Driver Licensing – Guide for Parents.

Michigan Segment 1 FAQ’s

The cost of Segment 1 depends on your location. Tuition includes classroom instruction, workbook, activities, 6 hours of driving, and 4 hours of observation in an All Star training vehicle. Segment 2 and the Road Test must be purchased separately.

Segment 1 is for students under 18 years old. Students 18 and older are recommended to take All Star’s online “All State” class instead. Programs at high schools are open to anyone as long as you are able to travel to the school to attend. To register, you must upload a birth certificate (or passport/state ID) and a signed contract to the student portal before class begins. Uploaded documents may take up to 3 business days for approval, so be sure to submit them early.

Students must attend 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 two-hour sessions which will include driving and observation, and pass a written exam with at least 56 out of 80 questions correct. Students are allowed three attempts. When everything is completed, a Segment 1 Certificate of Completion will be uploaded to your student portal and emailed within 10 business days.

After Day 1 of class, students will be granted access to schedule their behind the wheel training through the student portal. Students are expected to arrive on time for every scheduled session. If the school district calls a snow day, All Star’s classes and behind the wheel lessons are also canceled. Instructors may contact you if conditions improve.

Virtual students will take their final written exam at the location they selected at the time of enrollment.

No. After Segment 1, you will receive a Segment 1 Certificate of Completion (this is not a drivers license). This certificate is required to apply for a Michigan Level 1 License. You may apply for your Level 1 License at the Secretary of State once you are at least 14 years and 9 months old and at least 6 weeks have passed since you started Segment 1. With a Level 1 License, you must drive with a licensed parent/guardian or an adult 21 or older. You can find additional guidelines by referring to the Michigan Parent Checklist.
