Ohio FAQ’s
Ohio Residents Ages 18–20: All individuals in this age group applying for their first driver's license (effective September 30, 2025). Limited Term License Applicants (18+): All adults who are temporary residents applying for a non-renewable, non-transferrable license.
-
Ohio residents (ages 18–20) are required to take the full Class D course and must complete the following state requirements before scheduling a driving test:
- 24 hours of Class D online instruction.
- 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor.
- 50 hours of supervised practice driving, logged on BMV 5791 Fifty-Hour Affidavit, with a licensed adult (age 21+), including at least 10 hours at night.
- The Class D Driver Education course is not required by the state of Ohio if you are age 21 or older.
- If you are 21 or older and applying for your first license, you can generally proceed straight to the driving test after obtaining your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIPIC). However, if you fail that initial driving test, you are then required to complete the shorter, remedial Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course before you are eligible to attempt the test again.
- The online portion of the Class D Driver Education program requires 24 hours of instruction, which students can complete at their own pace over a maximum period of 180 days.
- Students are limited to completing a maximum of 4 hours of online instruction per day. Additionally, a mandatory 10-minute break must be taken after every two hours of continuous online learning.
- To successfully finish the course, students must pass the final written exam with a score of 75% or greater.
- Logged 50 hours of driving (with 10 of those hours being at night) with a parent or guardian.
- Held their TIPIC for at least 6 months.
